How to Smoothly Play AVCHD on Edius 5 for Editing

Published on by transcode-video

If you use camcorders like Canon HF11, Panasonic HDC-TM700 to shoot HD videos in AVCHD format, and have Canopus Edius as the professional editing software, you may notice that Edius 5 is able to import AVCHD videos. However, when you play the AVCHD on timeline, the video stutters and the CPU is heavily loaded. If the same video source was brought to Adobe Premiere CS4, it could playback smoothly on the same computer.

The reason Adobe Premiere plays AVCHD as smooth as button in real-time may lie on the playback process of PPCS4, which do not have to drive a full frame, full raster output. The playback of AVCHD on timeline may be at a reduced rate. While Edius plays AVCHD stream in full quality/frame rate.

Here I collect two kinds of solutions for you to get resolve AVCHD playback problem on Edius 5.

Solution 1. Update computer hardware.
You need at least Quad Core 9550, even though the official minimum requirement is AMD single core CPU. It is recommended that you use an 8-core processor to play properly in Edius. This is the only way to enjoy good playback, when you want to avoid the conversion from AVCHD to a different format. Otherwise you will still get the choking video playback on Edius as AVCHD requires a lot of CPU power.

Solution 2. Convert AVCHD to MPEG for Edius.
While you are not updating your computer or do not have the plan recently, you can follow the alternative solution to convert AVCHD video to other formats for Edius like .mpg, .mov, .wmv. Aunsoft Video Converter is the recommended AVCHD video to Edius converter for you play the recorded videos on Edius 5 in real-time without choppy problem.

To convert AVCHD .mts and .m2ts to .mpg, you just need to run the AVCHD video converter, click the Add button to load AVCHD files, and click the drop-down list of Format option to choose HD Video > MPEG-2 HD Vidoe(*.mpg). Then click the convert button on the bottom right corner to start conversion high quality.

Hope this help you get through the problem playing AVCHD on Edius to easily edit and create your videos on Windows.
